“Old Skool” By Nick Ringelstetter
This piece was inspired by a painting created by one of the many artists Ringelstetter has met who seemed to be “lost in time”. Ringelstetter obtained a painting via trade from Lance Burka during a show in the Wisconsin Dells. The piece embodied a simple scene of a crow sitting on top of a television in the grass and showed the dirt below the earth’s crust. As Ringelstetter looked at it over time, he grew inspired to create a piece with a similar concept, except he would add in some of his beloved video game characters.
One of the most special things about this piece is its frame, which
Ringelstetter also created. Using actual pieces from arcade games, the artist built his own arcade cabinet that lights up when the joystick is moved or the buttons are pushed. This original idea attracted many people to Ringelstetter’s booth over the course of many shows, and undoubtedly hooked a few buyers for other pieces as well. This piece goes to show that art doesn’t have to stop at the edge of the canvas.
